SSDI vs. SSI

SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) is based on your work history and earnings. You must have worked and paid into Social Security.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is needs-based for people with limited income and resources, regardless of work history.

Disability Definition

To qualify, your condition must:

  • Last or be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
  • Prevent you from doing substantial gainful activity (SGA)
  • Prevent you from adjusting to other work

Common Conditions

Conditions we frequently help with:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (back, joints)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Neurological disorders
  • Cancer and immune disorders

Work Credits

For SSDI, you need sufficient work credits earned through paying Social Security taxes. Generally, you need 40 credits (10 years of work), with 20 earned in the last 10 years. Younger workers may need fewer credits. We'll help determine if you qualify.

What We Need

Documents that strengthen your case:

  • Treatment records from all providers
  • Lab results and imaging reports
  • Prescription medication list
  • Work history documentation
  • Daily activity limitations info

Hearing Tips

What to expect at your ALJ hearing:

  • Informal setting, not a courtroom trial
  • Judge will ask about your conditions
  • Be honest about limitations
  • We'll be there to represent you
